چکیده

In this paper we present a linear time approximation scheme for the job shop scheduling problem with fixed number of machines and fixed number of operations per job. This improves on the previously best 2 + ǫ, ǫ > 0, approximation algorithm for the problem by Shmoys, Stein, and Wein. Our approximation scheme is very general and it can be extended to the case of job shop scheduling problems with release and delivery times, multi-stage job shops, dag job shops, and preemptive variants of these problems.

Makespan Minimization in No-Wait Flow Shops: A Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme

We investigate the approximability of no-wait permutation flow shop scheduling problem under the makespan criterion. We present a polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for problem on any fixed number of machines.

Minimizing Makespan in No-Wait Job Shops

In this paper we study polynomial time approximation schemes (PTASes) for the no-wait job shop scheduling problem with the makespan objective function. It is known that the problem is MaxSNP-hard in the case when each job is allowed to have three operations or more. We show that if each job has at most two operations, the problem admits a PTAS if the number of machines is a constant (i.e., not ...

A note on makespan minimization in proportionate flow shops

We consider two generalizations of the proportionate flow shop scheduling problem with the makespan objective. Each job has a processing requirement and each machine has a characteristic value. In our first (second) case we assume that the time a job occupies a machine is the maximum (minimum) of the processing requirement of the job and the characteristic value of the machine. We show that the...

On (1, ∊)-Restricted Assignment Makespan Minimization

Makespan minimization on unrelated machines is a classic problem in approximation algorithms. No polynomial time (2− δ)-approximation algorithm is known for the problem for constant δ > 0. This is true even for certain special cases, most notably the restricted assignment problem where each job has the same load on any machine but can be assigned to one from a specified subset. Recently in a br...
